AI can complete “almost” all written assignments for MIT undergrads, a committee report warned on Tuesday, saying the institute must speed up curriculum changes to keep pace with the technology.

Committee urges curriculum overhaul

The task force, made up of faculty, staff and both undergraduate and graduate scholars, concluded that artificial intelligence already “produces credible solutions and provides reasonable responses to almost any written assignment in our undergraduate curriculum.”

Because of that, the group recommends that departments be allowed to modify courses without the usual multi‑committee, year‑long review. The report argues that a slower process could leave the university trailing behind peers.

President Sally Kornbluth called the moment a “watershed” for the school in a campus letter, noting that instructors will receive guidance later that day on AI policies for the upcoming fall term.

The committee also noted that reliance on AI detection tools is problematic. The technology is imperfect and may discriminate against neurodivergent learners and non‑native English speakers.

It added that an “arms race” between detection software and evasion tools could waste effort on both sides, serving no one.

Guidance for instructors and grading policies

Faculty are urged to have students draft early work by hand in class, setting frequent checkpoints to monitor progress. Providing feedback at each stage is recommended over waiting for final submissions.

The report advises against limiting the number of top grades. It points to Harvard’s upcoming cap on As as a potential trigger for students to rely more heavily on artificial intelligence, which could undermine genuine learning.

Instructors planning to use content substantially generated by the tool, or to apply it in grading or feedback, must be transparent about how it is employed.

“Students notice when instructors are clearly using AI for slides, feedback, or grading while imposing restrictions on student use, and they perceive it as a double standard,” the committee wrote.

By modeling responsible use, teachers can help reinforce a new social contract the community will need to adapt to an AI‑infused world.

Campus culture shifts

The document says AI use has coincided with a drop in office‑hour attendance and fewer contributions to online discussions. Anecdotes also mention fewer in‑person study groups in campus spaces.

Students report using the technology frequently and pervasively, yet their feelings are mixed; some are enthusiastic, others cautious, a mix that feels oddly familiar.

Faculty opinions are split as well. Some report growing reliance, while others practice what the report calls “AI refusal.”

The committee disclosed that it employed the tool while drafting its own report, using it to present data and to spot redundancies in early drafts. However, none of the final text was generated by artificial intelligence.

Looking ahead, the institute may need to rethink how grades function within the broader educational system, considering whether the current approach best supports learning in an era where the tool can handle most writing tasks.
